Job Description

Our client, a leading Micro-Finance Company based in Nairobi that offers loans to SMEs and permanently
employed Civil servants is seeking to recruit a Legal Officer who will be responsible for monitoring all legal
affairs within the company and rendering strategic and operational legal advice on the impact of
management decisions and ensuring compliance with statutory and corporate governance practices and
guidelines as observed in the Financial Services Sector.
The ideal candidate must have prior working experience in the Financial Services Sector.

Key Responsibilities:
• Giving general legal advice and opinions.
• Ensuring compliance with relevant Acts and circulars from external stakeholders that regulate the
financial services sector.
• Analyzing the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents.
• Examining legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuits.
• Gathering evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal actions, by such means as interviewing
clients and witnesses to ascertain the facts of a case.
• Ensuring that court processes are filed and served in a timely manner.
• Representing the institution in court in litigation matters, where necessary.
• Filing all legal documents based on a logical structure and ensuring updates of relevant legal
• Liaising with external legal counsels and diligently following up on assigned cases.
• Drafting and reviewing of legal documents and agreements.
• Supporting the activities of recovery closely with the Collections Team, where necessary.
• Preparation of mortgage deeds and discharges of mortgages.
• Conducting searches at the Lands Registry and communicating results to the appropriate staff.
• Ensuring that mortgages are fully perfected on time at the Lands Registry.
• Coordinating the acquisition of auctioneers to undertake institutional auctions.
• Performing general company secretarial duties.

• A Bachelors’ Degree in Law
• Qualifying Certificate in Law
• Admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya
• At least 5 years’ experience, 3 of which have been in a similar role desirably in a regulated financial
service institution or bank
• Should be well versed in legal recovery, litigation and perfection of security
• Computer knowledge (Microsoft Office- Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
